Part 6 of a 12-part series on YogaMotion Academy’s Mission and Values

We embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
Challenges are an inevitable part of life. Whether it’s challenging times, people, or circumstances, most of us can relate to coming up against roadblocks in life that feel hard, unfair, or even devastating. This might be the death of a loved one, an illness, an injury, a bad breakup or divorce or the loss of a job to name just a few.
I have been interested in people and what makes them tick for a long time. My major in college was psychology. I have found the various ways that people respond to difficult times in life fascinating. Some people face horrible tragedies and somehow come out the other side stronger. Others crumble under the weight of the pressure and heartache they face. The exact same challenge and circumstance that leaves one person unfazed can break another.
Why is that? How do we learn and grow from our challenges instead of becoming swallowed up by them? How do we shape that transformation to help us move forward, instead of leaving us stuck? While there is no one way for everyone, I do feel there are certain commonalities amongst those that tend to be more resilient.
One is perspective. I believe it is how we view our challenges. Do we look at them as an opportunity for growth or do we feel like life has done something to us? For example, recently, in my newsletters, I have been sharing my own personal challenges I have experienced in my lifetime as a way to help others know that they are not alone, there is hope and to help them understand how I got started on this path of holistic health and healing.

Since I was young I have always aligned with the understanding that these difficult times were an opportunity for me to learn something and to grow from them. I never saw myself as a victim or poor me. I innately understood that there were gifts in them even if in the moment it didn’t appear that way.
From depression to a serious low back injury to a divorce I know, without a doubt, that they helped me along this path and for that I am forever grateful. I know that my perspective has always helped me move forward and not get stuck.
The other commonality is curiosity. To be in a state of wonder. The way to help ourselves come back to that place of wholeness is to be curious about life and all it offers. With this attitude, we can help transform our challenges into opportunities for growth by allowing the struggles to unfold, by moving through the challenges and by experiencing every little part without losing ourselves along the way. When we are open and inquisitive, we are more able to find the inspiration to move forward, live fully, grow and heal our wounds. We have a better chance of coming through the other end stronger.
We here at YogaMotion Academy embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and it is our honor to support others do the same. After all, at the end of the day, what most of us really want is to feel good, to feel understood, to be accepted and to feel loved.
