What began as Bozeman’s first Yoga Studio in 1998, has flourished as a School of Yoga certifying hundreds of Yoga Teachers from across the globe. Having completed 45 Trainings (RYS200) over the past 20 years, Nancy Ruby has developed the curriculum to include another 300 hours of Advanced Training in Yoga and Ayurveda (RYS300) and continuing education courses (YACEP), as well as offering classes and special events for the general public.
Proudly expanding beyond what she could do alone, YogaMotion now operates as a team of dedicated women known as the YogaMotion Collective. Martha Piersma, Turi Hetherington, and Sara Valentine now serve with Nancy as the hub of the Academy. Their primary mission is to offer inspiring and empowering opportunities leading to personal and planetary evolution through practices that support a vibrant, easeful, soulful life.

People often ask me how I became interested in yoga. I’d like to think that I got into it to become more spiritual. That is not the case. I started to practice yoga because I was a runner with tight hamstrings and tight hips. I couldn’t even get close to touching my toes. I was also developing high blood pressure, headaches and anxiety. Basically I didn’t feel very good, inside and out and I wanted to. I wanted to experience freedom.
I started my practice in 2001 at the Women’s Club in Missoula, MT. My first class I became dizzy and nauseous. I was curious about the sensations that were rising in my body. I was incredibly uncomfortable and frankly embarrassed that I couldn’t “do” more of the poses. I had always been an athlete. I was competitive and used my competitive nature to push myself – to the end of the swimming pool, to the finish line, to basically be the best. And here’s the kicker. I felt I wasn’t enough.
I persevered. I became more and more interested in other aspects of yoga. I started to feel better, inside and out. Did my hamstrings become longer? Probably not, but now my hips didn’t hurt, my headaches eased and I was no longer taking meds for high blood pressure. I was healing myself and this felt empowering.
Today as we get close to the end of 2017, I am involved in guiding others to become yoga teachers. I teach group classes in yoga, breathing and meditation in the Bitterroot Valley and Bozeman.
Martha studied with Nancy Ruby, Erich Schiffmann, Bernie Clark and Deepak Chopra and is currently studying to become a certified meditation teacher with Dr. Lorin Roche and Camille Maurine.

My journey towards natural and healthy lifestyle choices began over 20 years ago. At the time, I was a stay at home mom with a husband who traveled extensively. I struggled daily with feeling depressed and unmotivated. Even making a phone call for a repairman became daunting. With a family history of depression, my doctor prescribed the usual anti-depressants and sent me home. Something in me knew that there might a different way.
Through research and study, I realized my diet could be partially to blame for my emotional state. I made several dietary changes, saw marked improvement, and I’ve never struggled with being depressed again.
Life was great! Until another setback two years later.
One day while bending over to pick something up I heard a loud pop. I found myself in great pain. The excruciating pain in my low back prevented me from sleeping and from enjoying all the things I loved like cycling, tennis and swimming, as well as playing with my daughters. The doctors said I was looking at pain meds, steroid shots and possibly surgery. Ugh! My sister told me to try Yoga. Really?
The first 6 months were awful. Although it made my back feel a lot better I found it incredibly boring and couldn’t wait to get better and get out of there! Again, a voice inside spoke to me and said there was a bigger reason for me to be there than just my back and I was not going to go down the road of drugs.
I continued with Yoga and I’m so glad I did. It has been an incredible blessing to say the least.
By making different choices, I began to find myself for the first time and discovered empowering tools for health, growth and transformation. Where I once suffered with low self-worth and lacked confidence, Yoga helped me to discover what was truly important to me and my passion and purpose in life.
I became a certified Yoga Instructor in 2001, completed my Yoga therapy certification in 2006 and in 2010, dove into my ongoing Ayurvedic studies. These tools have given me a complete tool box for health and wellbeing that I love to share with others.
If you are looking for ways to educate and empower yourself with the tools to improve your health, reduce stress, find purpose and a sense of community then jump into YogaMotion Academy and enjoy the many classes, workshops and teacher trainings that will help you to live your life to the fullest!

I originally stepped into yoga to “stretch” and, like so many others, quickly learned it was so much more. I found the teachings to be the missing piece yoking my life together – physically, mentally and spiritually.
After years of practicing yoga on and off the mat, I enrolled in YogaMotion RYS200 teacher training to see where the path would take me. That was seven years ago. Graciously, that path has since taken me through the RYS300 training and into the YogaMotion Collective.
To further round-out my studies in holistic health and wellness, and because I love to eat, I also studied with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) to add Holistic Health Coach to my healthy living toolbox. Living in a society with things on store shelves called food that bear little resemblance to the real thing, I know how hard it can be to truly know what “healthy” and “all-natural” really mean.
My training with IIN solidified my belief, along with my Norwegian father’s dogma, that being healthy and eating well is a lifestyle choice and an important piece of the mind-body-spirit connection. Today I am an affiliate of Purium’s Organic Superfood Company and enjoy sharing their products and witnessing the transformation that occurs when the body is deeply nourished.
Feeding the body well, breathing deeply and getting outside are, to me, the pillars of healthy living. I am grateful for the teachings of yoga yoking it all together, and the continual learning opportunities, and playtime in the mountains that fill my days. To quote Dr Joe Dispenza,
“Knowledge is power. Knowledge of yourself is self empowerment.”
Yoga is often the catalyst for this self-knowledge that creates a ripple effect leading to happier people and communities and, ultimately, a happier world. I like that. I plan to stick with it and see where the path takes me next.

RYT500 Yoga Nidra Teacher
I like the practice of yoga for many reasons. Yoga saved my life when I was a “puddle on the floor.” It helped my spine remain flexible through 67 years of rugged living. It has trained my mind to remain in a relaxed state while the world is chaotically spinning around me. It has given me the tools to receive life’s challenges as a welcomed guest at my door. For me, yoga is not just about learning to be FLEXIBLE … yoga is teaching me how to be FREE. I am a world traveler, and enjoy spending time in third world cultures where daily living is beautifully simplistic, nature loving, and unfettered by our intense technological schisms.
Hannah offers her wisdom in our RYS200 training, introducing the art and science of Yoga Nidra. She also offers a larger perspective of her skills in our RYS300 advanced training on The Psychology of Yoga, entitled Mind Over Matter.
E-RYT500 Anusara Certified Yoga Teacher
Yoga has been a part of my life for almost 30 years now. It is my compass and has given me the gift of trusting the universe, and a way to ride its deep currents, to see the dark places as juicy nutrients for soul work, growth and becoming. Asana has taught me how much I value vulnerability, creativity and beauty, and that beauty is an inside quality seeking to express itself into the outside. Yoga has shown me a Way to trust the journey, to stay steady on the path through the exhilarating peaks as well s the valleys of life. My passion is to share with humor the deep lessons we learn by staying steady through difficulty which grants us the experience of our true worthiness.
Anna offers her guidance in yoga philosophy, structural alignment principles, and the art of hands-on support through weekend workshops that fulfill elective options for our RYS300 Training.
